The Smile Dental Academy’s Diploma in Facial Aesthetics offers dental and medical professionals an in-depth understanding of the latest non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments. This course enables clinicians to safely and confidently deliver treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers, manage complications, and apply advanced techniques.

This programme is designed for experienced practitioners and spans a flexible schedule consisting of 6 days of intensive clinical mentoring. This includes face-to-face teaching days with lectures, hands-on practical sessions, live patient demonstrations, and case-based discussions, complemented by comprehensive online learning materials.

Participants will gain the opportunity to treat patients under supervision from experienced clinicians, enhancing real-world skills and confidence.

The course is divided into modules covering:

  • Core theoretical knowledge

  • Clinical skills development

  • Advanced aesthetic treatment techniques

Delivered by a team of GDC-registered specialists and seasoned aesthetic practitioners with extensive experience in both hospital and private practice settings, the programme ensures high-quality instruction.

Upon completion, participants will be equipped to evaluate, assess, plan, and manage facial aesthetic cases safely and effectively within general practice.

      • Unit 2: Principles of Aesthetic Consultation, Assessment, and Treatment Planning: Theory of communication, patient psychology, advanced facial analysis, consent, and record-keeping.

      • Unit 3 & 4 (Theoretical Foundations): Pharmacology of Botulinum Toxin and Dermal Fillers, different product types, mechanisms of action, and initial indications.

      • Unit 5 (Foundations): Basic principles of complication management, infection control.

      • Unit 6 (Foundations): Ethical principles, basic clinical governance.

    • Review of relevant UK guidelines (e.g., JCCP, GMC/NMC).

    • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) and Anaphylaxis management certification.

    • Logbook Initiation: Start documenting observed procedures (if required by Educals from the outset).

    Block 3: Clinical Mentorship / Supervised Practice Days

    Focus: Developing Competency & Confidence with Volume of Cases

    These days are highly individualized, with students working on a variety of live patients under the direct supervision of an expert Level 7 trainer. The goal is to build the required logbook of supervised treatments (e.g., 10 botulinum toxin and 10 dermal filler minimum, some awarding bodies require 20+ of each under direct supervision).

    Post Face-to-Face Days (Ongoing during the program):

    • Independent Study: Continued e-learning, reading, research.

    • Written Assignments: Completion of essays, literature reviews, or short answer questions (SAQs) related to all units.

    • Portfolio Development: Meticulous completion of the procedural logbook with detailed case studies, before-and-after photos, and reflections. This often includes a significant number of case studies (e.g., 30 botulinum toxin and 30 dermal filler cases, some supervised, some observed, and some independently performed once signed off).

    • Self-Reflection: Critical analysis of own practice, identifying areas for improvement

    • Morning: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

    • Afternoon: Direct Observation of Practical Skills (DOPS) - Final Assessment

    • Written Examination: Comprehensive examination covering all theoretical units (anatomy, pharmacology, complications, ethics, consultation). This might be multiple choice, short answer, or essay questions.

    • Portfolio Review: Assessment of the completed procedural logbook and case studies.

  • Accurately identify the course of major vascular structures and nerves, with particular focus on high-risk danger zones.

  • Evaluate the structure and functional roles of facial muscles, fat compartments, and retaining ligaments in both facial expression and ageing.

  • Critically discuss the multifactorial biological processes of facial ageing at cellular, tissue, and structural levels.

Unit 2: Principles of Aesthetic Consultation, Assessment & Treatment Planning

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

  • Formulate a structured, comprehensive aesthetic consultation process incorporating medical, social, and aesthetic history.

  • Critically evaluate patient motivations, expectations, and psychological wellbeing, including screening for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

  • Apply systematic facial assessment methods including visual analysis, palpation, and photographic documentation.

  • Develop safe, individualized, and evidence-based treatment plans aligned with patient goals and anatomical considerations.

  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of informed consent, including capacity, voluntariness, and full disclosure.

Unit 3: Pharmacology & Clinical Application of Botulinum Toxin

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the pharmacology, molecular structure, and mechanism of action of botulinum toxin products.

  • Critically assess reconstitution methods, storage requirements, and dosage calculations.

  • Identify evidence-based aesthetic indications for botulinum toxin across the upper, mid, and lower face.

  • Explain theoretical principles of dosage, injection points, and injection techniques for common indications.

  • Recognise common adverse effects and outline initial theoretical management strategies.

Unit 4: Science & Clinical Application of Dermal Fillers

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

  • Classify dermal fillers by composition and rheological properties, including G-prime, cohesivity, and viscosity (with focus on Hyaluronic Acid).

  • Explain the mechanisms of action by which dermal fillers achieve volumisation, contouring, and line correction.

  • Identify evidence-based aesthetic indications for dermal filler use across facial regions.

  • Explain theoretical principles of dosage, injection depth, and techniques (needle and cannula).

  • Recognise common adverse effects and outline initial theoretical management strategies.

Unit 5: Management of Complications & Medical Emergencies in Aesthetic Practice

  • Identify both common and severe complications associated with botulinum toxin and dermal filler treatments.

  • Describe the causes, clinical signs, and symptoms of major complications including vascular occlusion, infection, and anaphylaxis.

  • Outline the immediate theoretical response to suspected vascular occlusion, including the role of hyaluronidase.

  • Explain the theoretical emergency management of anaphylaxis and acute allergic reactions.

Unit 6: Professionalism, Ethics & Clinical Governance in Aesthetic Practice
